$500m Lifeline For Basic Education

At the meeting of Coalition Interventions to Support Access and Quality of Education in Nigeria hosted by President Goodluck Jonathan at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja, former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown announced Nigeria and Global Partnership for Education are committing additional resources of $500 million to support the development of universal basic education in Nigeria. President Jonathan also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the effective implementation of policies and measures that will ensure that the Nigerian youth receive qualitative education that will equip them with essential skills and competencies required by employers.
Brown said “The Federal Government of Nigeria has made available $250million for investment in education by the states. What we have managed to do by talking to the individual agencies over the last few days is to match that $250million by the additional $250million making possible new investment of $500million in education in Nigeria.” A breakdown of the funding given by Brown indicated that Global Partnership for Education and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have agreed to contribute $100 million each for the development of universal education while federal and state governments have already provided $250 million for the development of education in the country. “I believe that an additional cash transfer is for training, introduction of new technologies can now match the initiatives that have been taken by Mr. Dangote from the business community and other initiatives among five agencies.”
Brown added that Nigeria stands to benefit from a seven year term European Union (EU) grant that will be devoted to the development of education.

CBN To Lower Banking Costs

Part of the objectives of the revised version of the Nigeria Payment System (NPS) Vision 2020 Strategy launched by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Abuja last month is to reduce the cost of banking services in the country by at least 30 per cent. Governor of the bank, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, at the event, which was at the sideline of the international conference on Payment System explained that the goal of the document is to see the emergence of a new collateral management for all the deferred net settlement systems, as well as strengthen payments system by embedding holistic review of infrastructure into scheme management process.
The revised document resulted from identified deficiencies observed in the existing market infrastructure, Sanusi said while promising that an online document would be published by the bank indicating interim steps to achieve long term objectives. He also promised that CBN would strengthen the scheme to reflect greater responsibility of scheme management covering all aspects of risks, business management and operational resilience.
“The key recommendations in the revised document resulted from identified deficiencies when the existing market infrastructures were assessed against the current 24 BIS/IOSCO Principles for Financial Market Infrastructure (PFMI). It is pertinent to note that the key recommendations resulted from a much higher target for compliance than was possible in 2007, due to the significant progress already achieved. Specifically, the Central Bank of Nigeria shall: Ensure that henceforth, no national payments system shall invoke the principle of unwind. CBN will formally inform the industry that unwinds must not be invoked in any national payment system. Each payment scheme must define and formally document the exact point at which payments are deemed to be ‘final and irrevocable.”
Another disclosure by Sanusi is that the CBN will remove its implicit role of ‘Lender of Last Resort’ for the RTGS payment system by December 2016 and Deferred Net Settlement systems by December 2019.
He equally disclosed that the apex bank has licensed 18 Mobile Money Operators (MMOs) which are currently doing an average of over N1 billion worth of transactions per month but despite the success so far recorded, the Nigerian payments system continues to face daunting challenges of infrastructure deficit like power, communication network, etc, slow adoption of e-payments due to prevailing cash culture merchant’s apathy to POS terminals due to transaction fee, literacy level, cost of electronic banking services and low level of public awareness on the existence of some e-payment products.
He reiterated other challenges identified to include concentration of e-payment facilities in the urban centres, unavailability of financial services in most rural areas, lack of effective national identification system and absence of e-payment laws or National Payments System Act.

Places To Visit In Nigeria

Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan, Sudan and South Sudan, Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan, North Korea, Colombia are officially the most dangerous countries in the world to visit in 2013. Despite the threats of insurgencies in the North Eastern parts of Nigeria, and orchestrated cases of kidnappings in the south, Nigeria is still one of the most peaceful and beautiful countries of the world with flora and fauna
Azumini Blue River Rose
Azurnini Blue River is located in Abia State towards its boundary with Akwa lbom State. The River has become a resort for tourists because of the pleasantness it offers. The attractive features of the River include its crystal-clear blue water; canoe rides; sandy beaches with such relaxation facilities as chairs and tables. There is a generous display of the best of man-made and natural tourism potentials.  A visit to habour towns such as Oron, Mbo and Ikot Abasi is a tale of the huge volume of business interests these areas used to generate in the past. The interesting story is that they are coming back as the state opens up for business and investments in virtually all its sectors.
There is a handful of attractions as in its sister state – the Biafrian soldiers cave takes you to the past and allows you decide the future, the Mary Slessor’s cairn at Ibiono is worth seeing, and the Oron Park.  A trail of the slave trade route at Ikot Abasi, the 1929 Aba Women Riot Centre, and divisional office of Sir Fredrick Lord Lugard built in 1912, among others, are characteristics definition of a genuine tourism haven.
Following after the feats of Cross River, its sister state, Akwa Ibom seems to be opening up for investments in the tourism and business sectors and hopefully wants to reroute tourist traffic to the state.
No doubt, these rich tourism potentials were reasons the state is embarking on different environmental and infrastructural development to build a formidable platform to drive the state practical tourism campaign for a sustainable economic activities.
