Students Receive ₦40,000 as NELFUND Clears Two-Month Arrears
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has commenced payment of June and July upkeep allowances to eligible student beneficiaries nationwide, bringing relief to thousands enrolled in the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.
The disbursement clears outstanding arrears after many students received their ₦20,000 May allowance earlier this month. With the latest payment, beneficiaries are receiving ₦40,000 covering two months.
Excitement spread across campuses as students confirmed receipt of the funds via social media bank alerts. Many described the payment as a timely intervention to meet pressing needs such as transportation, feeding, study materials, and other essentials.
Beneficiaries praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for introducing the loan programme, saying it has “restored hope to thousands of Nigerian students pursuing higher education despite prevailing economic challenges.”
They also commended NELFUND’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, for ensuring the arrears were cleared, describing his leadership as “responsive and committed to student welfare.”
Some students, however, voiced frustration over the prolonged delays. One X user, Heis MusteeB (@haruna33704833), wrote: “Please upkeep should be the main focus now. Imagine students on regular programme that cannot work while studying because lectures alone take 2/3 of hours each day… finding it difficult to study because of financial constraints. Things are hard on students pls!!”
Responding, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) assured that all backlogs would be settled.
National President Akinteye Afeez said, “The payment of June and July NELFUND upkeep allowances has officially commenced. As I assured you, every outstanding backlog will be paid. We remain committed to ensuring that no eligible Nigerian student is left behind.”
Afeez appealed for patience among those yet to receive funds, explaining that payments are being processed in batches.
He reaffirmed NANS’ commitment to protecting student welfare and pledged continued engagement with stakeholders to ensure seamless implementation of the loan scheme.
