‎FG Rules Out Subsidy Return, Price Controls, Eyes Energy Opportunities Amid Iran Tensions

‎The Federal Government has reiterated its firm stance against the reintroduction of fuel subsidies and the imposition of price controls, signaling a continued commitment to market-driven economic reforms.

‎Speaking on the direction of fiscal and economic policy, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, emphasized that past subsidy regimes had inflicted significant distortions on the nation’s economy.

‎“We will not bring back subsidy because it creates destruction for the economy, and we won’t introduce price control because we believe in the market,” the minister stated.

‎The position aligns with the administration’s broader reform architecture aimed at improving efficiency, attracting investment, and restoring macroeconomic stability. Analysts note that subsidy removal has been a cornerstone of Nigeria’s fiscal recalibration, freeing up resources for infrastructure and social investments, even as it continues to generate debate over short-term inflationary pressures.

‎Oyedele further pointed to evolving global geopolitical dynamics, particularly tensions involving Iran, as a potential strategic opening for Nigeria’s energy sector.

‎“The situation in Iran presents new opportunities for us as the world looks to diversify sources of energy and invest in new markets,” he said.

‎This outlook reflects a forward-leaning strategy to position Nigeria as a competitive player in the global energy market, especially as supply uncertainties push major economies to seek alternative partners.
