Internet Hackers have continued to attack the website of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) which is the clearing house for IT projects in the public sector in Nigeria. The hackers who have debases several pages of the official website of NITDA, according to the finding of the Economic Confidential magazine, the agency is yet to rectify and address the problems even when it has ICT professionals in its workforce.

As of this morning November 23, 2010, there are many pages on NITDA websites where the attackers advertise hard drugs, sexual stimulants, Viagra and prostitutions. The following links to the website are clear examples of such transaction as of this morning on the NITDA sites: https://www.nitda.gov.ng/newnitda/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=881093,

NITDA is an agency of the federal government which claims it is committed to the drive to bring government and its services closer to the people through IT. The Economic Confidential gathered that it is entrusted with the implementation of the National IT policy, which seeks to make Nigeria an IT capable country in no distant future, NITDA has been mandated to supervise the management of the country code Top Level Domain as a national resource.

Internet fraudsters, sometimes called pranksters have continued to cause embarrassment for various websites of institutions of federal government. Only recently the Economic Confidential alerted the public on the attack on the National Assembly’s official websites before it was corrected after several days.

If an institution like NITDA that is charged with the responsibility of protecting the websites of sensitive institutions of government could be so attacked for several days, one could imagine what could befall other websites of individuals and corporate organisations in Nigeria?

The Economic Confidential could not confirm if the hackers have access to classified information on the NITDA website which us other websites of the government at the states and federal level. Presently some official websites of ministries and parastatals have been rendered useless for sometimes with secret documents tampered with.
