SALIDA MY LOVE: A Tribute To Barrister Hafsat
By Abdullahi Haruna
Like an apparition, I saw her come and disappears. She kept to her whims the disappearing act -while she enjoyed it I suffered in anticipation. To say she is beautiful is to be unfair to her- she is dangerously beautiful adorning the most tempting eyes the world has in store.
She never walked alone but always in the company of her kid’s brother. If you have seen a peacock walk then you have seen her. She walks with regal, counting her strides in majestic candour. Her movement is in tandem with every part of her body. She has one of the longest hair around and can be mistaken for a mermaid! This lady captured my admiration to no end.
I m not known to be a slacker but this damsel did render me impotent as I always see myself fright- ingrained whenever I see her from afar. She always melts my resolve and leaves me stranded and ineffective. I was a captive of her existence.
I wake up with the soothing balm of her voice raiding the airwaves. She sends me to sleep with her voice and wake me with same. Listening to her program on radio was a devotion. She lived in my consciousness and I was never in a hurry to let go. She was driving me nut and I was fast losing my heart.

I gathered the man in me after 9 months of liverless manliness. I went to her house not to see her but to smell her presence. I wanted to to be enveloped by her charming aura. She was my obsession and I was not ready to lose the scented feeling. Her mum was my host always as my lady in fantasy would never see me but speak in distant. She was not ready to reveal her mystery to me and I was losing out fast.
The heavens smiled on me when I saw her at close range for the first time -she was in her courtyard all alone, singing all to herself. Wow! here is the son of man face to face with my fantasy! Without looking back, she echoed the words that would forever melt my heart- She said, ‘Brother, why do you want to love a blind girl?”
I lost my steps as I fall towards her feet, shivering in muted perspiration. How can these set of eyes be blind? I cried. While I wailed she appeared calm and all Joy. ‘I may be physically blind but I see nature in her finesse, I do not join you guys to see the absurdities of the world.I read your mind brother, I can feel your heartbeats -it beats toward me and sometimes I’m tempted to listen to them but I fight to always overcome your tempting. Pardon my presumptuous stance, I wish to love but I fear to lose my intimacy with nature. As such I’m at peace without the world “.
Nature indeed is a mystery -just when you have built your desires it pops up with her irreversible decree. My Salida, with the touch of nature, is more at home in mystery than in reality. She lives in me forever and a day…
This piece is Dedicated to Hafsat a physically impaired lawyer who defied all odds to become who she is today. She is inspiring. You can share and tag any blind person you know that has refused to cave in to the burden of disability.
