FG Dismisses Reports of Electricity Tariff Hike
The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting plans to increase electricity tariffs, insisting that no proposal exists to raise rates for any category of grid-connected consumers.
Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure in the Office of the Vice President, Sadiq Wanka, clarified the matter in a statement.
“There is no planned tariff hike for consumers in any service band. The government remains committed to protecting vulnerable households through continued electricity subsidies,” he said.
Wanka explained that recent media reports misrepresented his comments at the Asharami Square 3.0 event in Lagos on July 22, where he spoke about investment opportunities created by ongoing reforms in the power sector.
He reaffirmed that his remarks were consistent with the National Integrated Electricity Policy, finalized in December 2024 and approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2025.
The policy outlines a gradual transition to cost-reflective tariffs, already implemented for Band A customers, but Wanka stressed that subsidies remain intact for other bands.
“Our presentation reaffirmed the tariff policy framework. While Band A customers are on cost-reflective tariffs, there are no plans to remove subsidies for other service bands,” he emphasized.
The clarification comes amid heightened public concern over rising living costs and speculation about potential adjustments in electricity pricing.
