‎Tinubu Pledges Stronger UK Ties as British Airways Marks 90 Years in Nigeria

‎President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening economic and diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom as British Airways celebrates 90 years of operations in Nigeria.

‎The President gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from British Airways at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The team was led by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, alongside the airline’s Commercial Officer, Colm Lacy.

‎Tinubu described the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the UK as strategic and beneficial, noting that the partnership has created opportunities for trade, investment and people-to-people connections over the decades.

‎He also recalled his recent visit to the United Kingdom, where he was received by King Charles III, describing the experience as memorable.

‎“The transformation and strengthening of our relationship over the past 90 years is a milestone worthy of celebration,” the President said.

‎Tinubu praised the role of British Airways in connecting Nigeria with the UK and the wider world, saying the airline has contributed significantly to commerce, tourism and educational exchanges.

‎He added that Nigeria is implementing reforms across key sectors, including aviation, to meet global standards and attract greater investment.

‎The President also noted that his administration had moved swiftly to clear outstanding liabilities owed to foreign airlines, saying the intervention by the Central Bank of Nigeria had helped restore confidence in the sector.

‎“We celebrate with you your remarkable 90 years of operation in Nigeria, and we hope to continue building a stronger and more rewarding partnership,” he said.

‎Speaking earlier, Lacy said British Airways’ relationship with Nigeria dates back generations, adding that the country remains one of the airline’s most valued markets.

‎He said the carrier’s daily services support Nigerian entrepreneurs, students, tourists and families travelling to the UK and other parts of the world.

‎Lacy also commended the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the Central Bank of Nigeria for improving operational confidence and safety standards.

‎Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said British Airways now deploys new aircraft on the Nigeria-London route and has complied with the government’s directive to include local dishes on outbound international flights.

‎Also speaking, Montgomery said Tinubu’s recent UK visit produced major investment agreements aimed at boosting trade and economic cooperation between both countries.

‎He cited the planned rehabilitation of Lagos ports as one of the projects expected to benefit from UK financing and partnership.
