Exports Account for 35% of Nigeria’s Gas Output in 2025

Nigeria produced 2.71 trillion standard cubic feet (scf) of gas in 2025, with exports accounting for nearly 35% of total output, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The figure surpassed 2024’s 2.5 trillion scf, with exports reaching 942.7 billion scf, compared to 780.6 billion scf sold domestically.

Another 776.6 billion scf was used for field operations, bringing total utilisation to 2.5 trillion scf, or 92.4% of production.

Associated gas contributed 1.456 trillion scf, while non-associated gas accounted for 1.25 trillion scf, showing a relatively balanced split between sources.

Monthly production peaked in July at 250.9 billion scf, while September recorded the lowest output at 198.3 billion scf.

Export volumes were highest in December at 101.9 billion scf, but fell to just 45.4 billion scf in September.

Domestic sales were strongest in May at 73 billion scf but dropped to 56.1 billion scf in December.

Despite strong utilisation, 204 billion scf was flared during the year, representing 7.5% of total production.

The report noted that flare volumes were highest in July at 18.3 billion scf, while December recorded the lowest at 15.4 billion scf. September had the highest flare rate at 9.05%.

NUPRC said the data highlights the dominance of exports in Nigeria’s gas market, accounting for 38% of total utilised gas. Final figures for Q4 remain subject to reconciliation.

Meanwhile, the NNPC/Heirs Energies OML 17 Joint Venture signed Gas Flare Commercialisation Agreements in October, aiming to capture flare gas for productive use in power generation, industry, cooking gas, and compressed natural gas, in line with Nigeria’s energy transition goals.
