Nigeria, South Korea Partner to Establish Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Plant
Nigeria is set to become Africa’s first Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing country with a partnership with South Korea’s Asia Economic Development Committee (AEDC).
The Federal Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with AEDC on January 30, 2026.
The Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, signed on behalf of the Federal Government, while AEDC Chairman, Mr. Yoon Suk-hun, signed for the South Korean organization.
This partnership aligns with Nigeria’s National Energy Transition Plan (ETP) and National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP).
The project will be implemented in phases, starting with EV assembly and expanding to full local manufacturing.
The estimated capacity is 300,000 vehicles, with the creation of approximately 10,000 jobs.
As the NADDC stated, “The project will be implemented in phases, beginning with EV assembly and expanding into full in-house production, with an estimated capacity of 300,000 vehicles and the creation of approximately 10,000 jobs.”
The Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Otunba Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, reaffirmed the initiative’s potential to drive sustainable growth in Nigeria’s automotive sector.
He emphasized the importance of technology transfer and research, design, and innovation.
Osanipin said, “This initiative will accelerate technology transfer, investment promotion, human capital development, as well as research, design and innovation.”
The NADDC stated that Nigeria is steadily building a sustainable automotive ecosystem that supports local manufacturing, green energy adoption, and global competitiveness. This partnership is seen as a significant step towards achieving these goals.
The project is expected to have a positive impact on Nigeria’s economy, creating new opportunities for businesses and individuals. The development of critical charging infrastructure nationwide is also part of the agreement.
