For the first time in years, travellers on the Abuja–Ilorin air corridor are enjoying real competition and more affordable fares, ending a long era of monopoly that kept ticket prices painfully high.

Until recently, Overland Airways was the only airline servicing the route, often charging between ₦260,000 and ₦300,000 for a one-way ticket—rates many passengers described as “unreasonable” and “exploitative.” As festive-season travel intensifies, passengers now have two additional alternatives: Umza Air and United Nigeria Airlines, both newly approved to operate direct flights between Abuja and Ilorin.

Umza Air: The Budget-Friendly Newcomer

Umza Air, which commenced scheduled flights to Ilorin recently, has quickly positioned itself as the most affordable choice. One-way fares between December 10 and 15 range from ₦145,000 to ₦180,000.

Its schedule—morning departures from Ilorin to Abuja and evening returns—appeals especially to civil servants, business travellers and public officials who frequently undertake same-day trips.

Passengers also commend Umza’s online booking system, flexible rescheduling policies, and simplified payment options.

United Nigeria Airlines: Midday Flights and Wider Network

United Nigeria Airlines, another recent entrant on the route, offers fares starting at about ₦175,000 for a one-way trip. While slightly higher than Umza’s pricing, the airline attracts travellers who prioritise operational reliability and the convenience of connecting to other major cities in its network.

Its midday departures and evening return flights offer a middle-ground option for travellers balancing multiple engagements.

Overland Airways: Reliable but Still the Costliest

Overland Airways, the long-standing operator on the corridor, maintains the highest number of weekly flights—morning, afternoon, and evening. However, its fares remain the steepest. One-way tickets cost between ₦260,000 and ₦300,000, while round trips between December 10 and 15 are estimated at ₦520,000 to ₦600,000.

Despite its dominance and reliability, many passengers say Overland’s pricing is no longer competitive.

Passengers Welcome Lower Fares and Better Choices

Travellers interviewed by Economic Confidential say the new competition has brought relief.

“Last year I had no choice but to pay over ₦250,000 for a one-way ticket,” said Mrs. Zainab Suleiman, a frequent commuter. “Now I can choose between three airlines. I’m booking Umza Air because it suits my budget.”

Another traveller, Abdullahi Musa, noted: “United Nigeria gives me more flexibility because I can connect to other cities if needed. Overland is good, but too expensive for a short trip.”

Passengers say having multiple options not only saves money but also allows them to plan trips around work or family commitments—something that was difficult when only one airline dominated the route.

Aviation analyst Chike Obi explains that increased competition is likely to stabilise or reduce fares on the route.

“Short-haul routes in Nigeria tend to be expensive when dominated by a single operator,” he said. “With three active carriers now flying Abuja–Ilorin, travellers will benefit from lower prices, better schedules and potentially new promotional offers.”

He added that airlines may introduce loyalty programmes and improved customer service to retain passengers.

With more options, balanced pricing, and improved schedules, the Abuja–Ilorin corridor is shaping up to offer one of the most traveller-friendly holiday seasons in years.
