HURIWA Hails Appointment of Uzor Kalu, Emeka Wogu on South-East Development Commission to a
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has lauded the recent appointment of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as the pioneer Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC). The announcement was made on Tuesday by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
The statement signed by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, National Coordinator HURIWA also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) for appointing Chief Emeka Wogu as the Premier Chairman of the South-East Development Commission’s governing body. HURIWA expressed optimism that the combined leadership of Wogu and Kalu would significantly contribute to the rapid development of the South-East region of Nigeria.

In a statement released on Wednesday, HURIWA emphasized Senator Kalu’s impressive track record in developmental projects, both as a former Governor of Abia State and as the current Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District. According to HURIWA, Kalu’s political career has been marked by a strong focus on infrastructure development and effective project execution.
The association highlighted various projects Kalu has undertaken, including the construction of roads, schools, healthcare centers, and ICT centers, as well as youth empowerment programs and support for small-scale businesses. These efforts have significantly improved the socio-economic landscape of his constituency.
HURIWA expressed confidence that Senator Kalu’s experience in both the executive and legislative arms of government makes him well-suited to oversee the activities of the SEDC. The commission’s mandate includes addressing critical developmental challenges in the South-East, such as civil restitution, erosion control, restoration of security, and the provision of essential infrastructure.
The association also praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his foresight in appointing Senator Kalu, describing the decision as a step towards addressing the region’s long-standing infrastructural deficits. HURIWA called on all stakeholders in the South-East, including state governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector, to support the efforts of the SEDC under Kalu’s leadership.
