The British government has approved N61bn for development programmes in Nigeria while Germany also provided N3 Billion for renewable energy and job creation.
The development where disclosed recently in Abuja by the Nigerian Minister for National Planning, Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman when stated that the programmes would support the government’s efforts to tackle the challenges of poverty and create a more enabling environment for stability, growth and development in Nigeria.
The approval consists of six programmes that will provide significant support in the areas of girls’ education, infrastructure, peace building, agriculture, women’s empowerment and increased support to the Nigerian government’s Transformation Agenda and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
Announcing UK’s support for the new programmes, Mr O’Brien said “The UK Government remains fully committed to supporting development in Nigeria and these new programmes contribute to our on-going scale up of UK Development Assistance here. We will continue to work closely with the Nigerian Government and other partners.”
Meanwhile the National Planning Commission has signed an agreement worth N3 billion with the German government for renewable energy and promotion of employment in Nigeria.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Minister National Planning Commission, Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman, said that Nigeria would work ensure it benefit from the agreement on renewable energy in the country.
The agreement was in pursuance to the existing relationship that has been entered in to between the two governments since 1974 on Technical Cooperation.
“We will be working closely with Germany to tap on their experience in the area of alternative means of renewable energy”
The German Head of Division for the Central/ West Africa and Madagascar, Ms Ute Heinbuch, in her remarks, said that, Germany is ready to support Nigeria generate energy through alternative means of energy, especially solar and wind energy.
The National Planning Commission (NPC) is responsible for ensuring that all donors design and operate programmes which fit into developmental efforts of the Nigerian government.
