… Generates only 2,700 Mega Watts
The Minister made this disclosure at a Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja. He stated that providing access to affordable, sustainable and reliable electricity supply for Nigerians is a critical national goal of the Federal Government.
He also said that repositioning of the power sector was cardinal to delivering electricity, and as such the Ministry has designed an extensive framework for the development and implementation of a commercially- oriented market for electricity supply.
Also at the occasion, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Power Holding Corporation of Nigeria, Engr. Hussein Labo disclosed that the current generation of electricity is at 2,700MW and said that available generation capacity was 4000MW. He explained that the shortfall was due to inadequacy in gas supply, adding that the system was capable of evacuating the total available capacity of 4000MW if gas was available.
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Dora Akunyili, the Minister of Information and Communications, commended the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), for being transparent in disclosing current generation of 2,700MW to Nigerians.
She solicited the support of the private sector in finding solutions to the problem as government cannot do it alone.
