UN Requests Arrival Details of Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate Jimoh Ibrahim Ahead of New York Posting

The United Nations has formally requested the travel details of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim CFR, Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate and Permanent Representative to the UN, as preparations advance for his assumption of duties at the organisation’s headquarters in New York City.

In a formal communication addressed to the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations in New York, the UN requested Ibrahim’s expected date of arrival in the United States, including his flight information. The organisation said the details were required to enable its protocol team arrange a formal courtesy reception for the incoming envoy at the airport, ahead of the official presentation of his Letter of Credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Sources familiar with the development confirmed that the UN has also advised that all approvals necessary for Ibrahim to resume duties upon arrival and commence the formal diplomatic process have been put in place.

Ibrahim, a serving senator, was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and confirmed by the Nigerian Senate in December 2025 as Nigeria’s representative to the world body — one of the most consequential diplomatic postings in Nigeria’s foreign service.

The presentation of the Letter of Credence is the standard diplomatic protocol through which an ambassador is formally recognised as the accredited representative of their country to an international organisation. Upon its completion, Ibrahim will officially assume his role as Nigeria’s voice at the United Nations.

His appointment brings a wealth of international exposure to the posting. In 2023, he served as President of a session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva — a role that placed him at the centre of global parliamentary diplomacy and signalled his standing on the international stage.

With the UN’s formal communication now received and all clearances in order, the curtain is set to rise on a new chapter in Nigeria’s engagement with the international community.
