Tinubu Orders Strict Implementation of 2026 Budget, Sets Tough Discipline on Spending
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed key economic and fiscal managers of the Federal Government to ensure strict discipline in the implementation of the 2026 Budget, insisting that all expenditures must align fully with approved details and timelines.
Speaking while presenting the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja, the President declared that 2026 would mark a turning point in budget execution, following challenges associated with transitions and competing fiscal demands in previous years.
“Let me be clear: 2026 will be a year of stronger discipline in budget execution,” Tinubu said, stressing that deviation from appropriated provisions would no longer be tolerated.
The President disclosed that he had issued clear directives to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Accountant-General of the Federation, and the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation to ensure that the budget is implemented strictly in accordance with legislative approvals.
According to him, the move is aimed at strengthening fiscal credibility, improving value for money, and restoring public confidence in the budgetary process.
Tinubu also expressed optimism about improved revenue performance in 2026, attributing the outlook to the implementation of the new National Tax Acts and ongoing reforms in the oil and gas sector.
He explained that the reforms are designed not only to boost government revenue but to entrench transparency, efficiency and fairness in Nigeria’s fiscal system, while delivering long-term value to the economy.
“These reforms are about building a sustainable fiscal architecture that works for Nigerians, seals leakages, and supports growth without imposing undue burden on citizens,” the President said.
The President assured lawmakers that the administration would continue to reduce waste, strengthen financial controls and ensure that every naira spent or borrowed delivers measurable public value.
He called on the National Assembly to support the Executive in enforcing budget discipline, noting that effective implementation remains the true test of any budget.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, pledging that improved budget execution and revenue mobilisation would translate into tangible benefits for citizens across the federation.
