12 States Enact Tax Harmonisation Law, 13 Others Begin Legislative Process – Oyedele

At least 12 Nigerian states have enacted the tax harmonisation law, according to Minister of State for Finance-designate Taiwo Oyedele.

Oyedele said another 13 states have presented the bill to their Houses of Assembly, while others are at different stages of implementation.

The law is part of President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform agenda, which aims to modernise Nigeria’s fiscal framework, support business growth, and protect vulnerable groups.

Speaking in Abuja at the graduation of 5,900 MTN Foundation-trained entrepreneurs, Oyedele explained that the harmonisation law seeks to eliminate nuisance taxes and prevent harassment of citizens.

He added that the law will simplify the tax system, protect taxpayers’ rights, and address unfair treatment. “Transparency, fiscal discipline, responsibility and accountability remain critical pillars of an effective tax system,” he said.

Tinubu had signed four tax reform bills into law on June 26, 2025, stressing that the reforms were not about raising taxes but about creating a structural reset and strengthening the social contract.

The president also said harmonised tax laws would boost government capacity to fund infrastructure projects, while reducing duplication and inefficiencies in revenue collection.

Analysts note that the reforms, if fully implemented across all states, could improve Nigeria’s ease of doing business and enhance investor confidence in the economy.
