Senate Commends FG on Launch of Halal Economy Strategy

The Nigerian Senate has praised the Federal Government for launching the National Halal Economy Strategy, calling it a bold policy that will help the country tap into the $7.7 trillion global halal market.

In a statement, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), described the initiative as timely and strategic, citing Nigeria’s agricultural base, youthful population, expanding manufacturing, and growing services sector as key advantages.

He noted that the strategy aligns with the administration’s broader economic reform agenda, including non-oil revenue mobilisation, export diversification, SME development, job creation, and increased foreign exchange earnings.

“The Senate Committee on Finance warmly commends His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the bold and forward-looking launch of Nigeria’s National Halal Economy Strategy,” Musa said, pledging full legislative cooperation and oversight to ensure effective implementation.

The Committee stressed that the initiative places Nigeria in line with global best practices, pointing out that several advanced and emerging economies—such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Brazil, and the UAE—have successfully leveraged halal frameworks to boost trade and investment.

Musa added that the policy is inclusive and market-driven, designed to enhance quality standards, certification, and competitiveness across multiple sectors while respecting Nigeria’s diversity.

“This decisive step reinforces Nigeria’s readiness to adopt proven international models, unlock new economic frontiers, and position itself as a competitive player in the evolving global economy,” the statement concluded.

Lawmakers said the strategy could help Nigeria diversify away from oil dependence, strengthen exports, and attract new investment, while ensuring that halal products and services meet international standards.
