PRNigeria Factcheck Debunks Viral Video Claiming Atiku’s Wife Insulted Obasanjo
A viral Facebook video purporting to show , wife of former Vice President , verbally attacking former President has been debunked as misleading following investigations by PRNigeria.
The video, widely circulated on Facebook between January 21 and 22, 2026, is accompanied by sensational Yoruba captions alleging that Mrs. Abubakar described Obasanjo as a “monkey” and accused him of sabotaging her husband’s presidential ambition. The claim quickly generated heated debates online, particularly among Yoruba-speaking audiences.
However, findings by PRNigeria show that the claim is false and based on misattribution.
The viral clip has been framed by social media users as a fresh political outburst, with some translations suggesting that Mrs. Abubakar issued insults and warnings to Obasanjo over Atiku Abubakar’s political future. This narrative raised red flags given the long-standing and complex political relationship between Atiku Abubakar and Obasanjo, who served together in government between 1999 and 2007.
Despite political fallouts in later years, interactions between the Abubakar family and Obasanjo have at various times remained cordial. Notably, ahead of the 2023 general elections, Mrs. Titi Abubakar paid a widely publicised courtesy visit to Obasanjo in Abeokuta, a gesture interpreted as respect and political reconciliation.w
To verify the viral claim, PRNigeria’s fact-check team conducted a detailed investigation using video verification tools, reverse image searches and social media trend analysis. The checks revealed that although the video gained traction recently, there is no evidence it was newly recorded or linked to any current political event.
Further searches across mainstream media platforms, social media news channels and verified accounts associated with Mrs. Abubakar found no record of her making such statements or publicly attacking Obasanjo. The clip was largely circulated on personal Facebook profiles and reels, often with mocking emojis and provocative captions, suggesting it was shared to generate controversy rather than convey factual information.
Technical analysis of the footage revealed inconsistencies, including uneven lip movement and audio mismatch, pointing to possible manipulation such as voice overlay or post-production dubbing. In addition, visual comparison with verified public photographs and appearances of Mrs. Abubakar showed clear physical differences.
Investigators established that the woman featured in the video is not Mrs. Titi Abubakar. While the former First Lady of Adamawa State is known to be fair-skinned and older, the woman in the viral clip appears younger and darker in complexion.
Further checks identified the individual in the video as Hajiya Aisha Mai Rago, a political commentator known for speaking in both Hausa and Yoruba. Her image, PRNigeria found, was wrongly attributed to Mrs. Abubakar as part of a misleading narrative crafted by social media users.
PRNigeria therefore concluded that the viral claim alleging that Atiku Abubakar’s wife insulted former President Obasanjo is misleading. The footage is unrelated to any recent event, and there is no credible evidence that Mrs. Abubakar made the remarks attributed to her.
The organisation warned that the incident underscores the growing misuse of manipulated videos and false attribution on social media to provoke outrage and drive engagement, urging the public to verify claims before sharing them.
