PEDAN Declares Solidarity with NUPENG Against Dangote Group’s “Anti-Worker Agenda”
The Petroleum Dealers Association of Nigeria (PEDAN) has officially declared its support for the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) in a letter of solidarity dated September 7, 2025. The letter, addressed to NUPENG’s National President, expresses PEDAN’s “unwavering solidarity” with NUPENG against the “anti-worker and anti-union practices” of the Dangote Group.
PEDAN’s decision to back NUPENG follows an urgent circular from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) dated September 6, 2025, which highlighted grave threats posed by the Dangote Group2. According to PEDAN, these practices are not just an attack on NUPENG but a “direct assault on the dignity of labour and the future of every Nigerian worker”
The association, which operates in collaboration with NUPENG , highlighted its shared pain and concern over dangerous working conditions, casualization of labor, union-busting, poor wages, and the denial of the constitutional right to freedom of association5. PEDAN leadership, comprising National President Comrade Waheed Tunde Bello and National Secretary Comrade Ibrahim Shehu Yahaya, emphasized that an attack on one union is an attack on all. The letter warns that if these practices succeed in the oil and gas sector, no Nigerian worker or industry will be safe from “unchecked corporate power”.
In the letter, PEDAN affirms its commitment to fully cooperate in all “legitimate actions” taken to resist this anti-worker agenda. The association stands “shoulder-to-shoulder” with NUPENG to defend Decent Work principles and ensure no entity places itself above the law. PEDAN concluded its message by stating, “In unity, there is strength”.
For legal counsel, PEDAN is represented by Falana & Falana’s Chambers in Abuja11. The association’s national office is located at 25B IBM Haruna Street, Utako, Abuja.
