Plateau, the media and 10 years of harvest of blood

Following the orgy of violence in Jos in September 2001 various explanations were pondered for the cold-hearted bloodletting that disrobed the city of the garment of innocence it once wore. Of all those, two in my opinion, stood out: politicians were blamed for abdicating their duty and for inciting the people against each other; and the media were accused of inflaming the tense situation. Being a journalist and student of conflict reporting/resolution I shall expound the second issue more.

The Challenge of Growing Poverty In Nigeria

Poverty is an insidious disease that incapacitates, depresses, and ultimately kills scores of people world-wide. Those afflicted can be old or young, black or white or brown, rich or poor, skinny or obese. Daily more than 50,000 people needlessly die from poverty. Nearly a billion persons unnecessarily suffer, some of them in the midst of plenty.

FIRS revenue hits N2.43t

The total revenue of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), which is generated through taxation in the first half of the year 2012, has increased to about N2.43 trillion. According the Director of Communications and Liaison Department, Mr. Emmanuel Obeta, the revenue generated was N499.2 billion more than the total collection of N1.94 trillion for the corresponding period last year.

NEXIM Disburses N550 Million to Nollywood

Nigerian Import Export Bank (NEXIM) has financed the burgeoning Nigerian entertainment industry since 2010 with over N550 million, its Managing Director/CEO Mr. Roberts Orya has said.
He said this at a press briefing in Lagos on its financing efforts to the Nigerian entertainment industry.
The support to the industry is partly being financed from NEXIM Bank’s coffers and partly from the Federal Government’s $200 million grants to the Nigerian entrainment industry.

FCT Generates N1.4b, Shares N1.72b Among Six Area Councils

The Federal Capital Territory Administration recorded internally generated revenue (IGR) of N1.472 billion for July 2012, the Minister of State for FCT, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, disclosed.

The minister, who made this known in Abuja while chairing the FCTA Area Councils Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) meeting, said the IGR rose by N371 million or 34 per cent over the preceding month’s figure of N1.101 billion.
