NPA Reports 19.5% Rise in Vessel Traffic in Q1

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reported a 19.5% increase in vessel traffic in the first quarter of 2026, with Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) for ocean-going vessels rising to 46.75 million.

Cargo throughput reached 32.38 million metric tons, reflecting strong growth in maritime operations.

According to the NPA’s Q1 2026 Operational Performance Review, cargo throughput excluding crude oil terminals grew by 11.6% year-on-year, up from 29.02 million MT in Q1 2025.

The agency attributed the growth to stronger import and export activities, improved cargo handling efficiency, and sustained demand for port services.

Outward cargo traffic rose by 23.7% to 14.13 million MT, while outward laden container traffic surged by 67.6%, climbing from 61,332 TEUs in Q1 2025 to 102,803 TEUs in Q1 2026.

Vehicle traffic also recorded notable gains, with 58,870 units handled, a 67% increase compared to 35,262 units last year.

Transshipment container activity grew by 83.1%, underscoring Nigeria’s rising importance in regional maritime trade and logistics networks.

NPA Managing Director Abubakar Dantsoho said at an industry forum in Lagos that Nigeria’s ports must become more efficient and competitive to fully benefit from opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The report highlights Nigeria’s growing role in regional trade, with improved operational indicators positioning its ports as key hubs for cargo movement across West Africa.
