NNPC Targets 600tcf Gas Reserves, 12Bcf/d Output by 2030

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has unveiled plans to expand Nigeria’s gas reserves from 215 trillion cubic feet (tcf) to over 600tcf and raise national production to 12 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) by 2030.

Executive Vice President for Gas, Power & New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, said the company is implementing a Gas Master Plan anchored on the Petroleum Industry Act and the Decade of Gas Framework. The near-term target is 10 Bcf/d by 2027.

Ogunleye noted that Nigeria is leveraging its proven reserves to power domestic industrialisation and expand exports. He cited Nigeria LNG Trains 1–6, which produce 22 million tonnes annually and have exported over 6,000 cargoes since 1999. Train 7 is due for completion in 2027.

Nigeria’s geographical advantage, with access to both Atlantic and Asian markets, positions it as a strategic global supplier. Ogunleye stressed that domestic utilisation and exports are not mutually exclusive, with a dual pathway designed to earn foreign exchange while deepening local energy use.

He said the strategy would create jobs, strengthen energy security and improve economic wellbeing. Nigeria has de-risked new LNG projects through a robust legal and regulatory framework supported by fiscal incentives.

Ogunleye added that stable security, competitive pricing and assured supply make this “the best time for investors and financiers to confidently participate in Nigeria’s LNG development.”

The expansion drive underscores Nigeria’s ambition to become a global gas hub, with the government betting on gas as a transition fuel to diversify revenues and reduce reliance on crude oil.
