Nigeria’s Gas Production Hits 7.93bcf/d in May – NUPRC
Nigeria’s average daily natural gas production rose to 7.93 billion standard cubic feet per day (bcf/d) in May 2026, a slight increase from 7.88bcf/d in May 2025, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
The figures highlight steady progress in expanding gas output as the government intensifies efforts to position natural gas as a driver of economic growth and energy security.
NUPRC data showed Non-Associated Gas (NAG) production slightly outpaced Associated Gas (AG), with NAG at 3.98bcf/d and AG at 3.96bcf/d, reflecting the growing importance of dedicated gas projects.
Total production eased marginally by 0.12% from April’s 7.94bcf/d, while year-to-date average output stood at 7.87bcf/d, up from 7.82bcf/d in Q1. Gas production has maintained an upward trend since January.
Nigeria channelled significant volumes to exports (3.07bcf/d, 40%), domestic supply (2.18bcf/d, 26.6%), and field operations (2.11bcf/d, 26.5%). Gas flaring accounted for 0.57bcf/d (6.9%), showing progress in reducing routine flaring.
Between January and April, Nigeria produced 947.78 billion scf of gas, of which 872.69Bscf was utilised and 57.34Bscf flared, keeping utilisation above 91%.
The increase in domestic supply supports power generation, industrial development, and gas-based manufacturing under the national gas expansion agenda.
NUPRC noted that Nigeria holds over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven reserves and has committed to ending routine flaring by 2030, while unlocking over 55 trillion cubic feet of uncommitted reserves through its Gas Development Roadmap.
