Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has inaugurated a multi-million Information and Technology Centre built and equipped by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for Rumfa College. Shekarau, who was represented on the occasion by Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abdulkareem Hassan, expressed appreciation to Shell for the gigantic project hopes that it will be maximally utilised for the benefit of the students in m the school by making them computer literate, which is the global phenomenon.
According to him, the project is the first of its kind in the state, urging the school to ensure that they provide maximum protection of the ICT facilities.
This project, he stressed is an important one, which he believes will impact positively on the acquisition of computer skills by the students of Rumfa College in meeting up with the Millennium Development Goals.
Speaking on the occasion, the Managing Director of Shell Exploration and Production Company Limited, Mr Chike Onyejekwe, explained that the donation of the ICT Centre is part of the Oil firm’s corporate responsibility in contributing to the development of Computer literacy, among secondary and tertiary institutions.
Shell Exploration Company, he pointed out has to date constructed and donated over 23 ICT projects to Secondary Schools and Universities in the country, which incidentally Rumfa College happens to be among the beneficiaries for emerging second place winners of the NNPC/Shell Cup football competition in 2001.
Onyejekwe disclosed that the project was completed within six months, while the Jevi Austin International Company Limited supplied and installed the ICT equipment, adding that the company would be saddled with the responsibility of training teachers, including the maintenance of the facilities for a period of one year.
According to him, the furnished ICT block of the School consists of 21 Desktop Computers with a backup, a Server, two multi-function network printers, (colour and black/white), a Visat Internet access, with three years Internet subscription for the School , including a 27KVA Sound-proof generator.
He expressed the hope that the centre would be sustained for future generation of students, pointing out that the company would continue to guide and advise the school authorities.
