The Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) has spoken about the vital role of good management in governance and expressed delight that the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC has held unto its rules of operations and it is not bending them to selectively suit some people ora particular interest.
The President of the Institute, Dr (Mrs.) Sally Nkem Adukwu-Bolujoko said this when she led the Institute’s Executives and some fellows on a courtesy visit to the Registrar General of the Commission, Alhaji Bello Mahmud.
The President of the Institute specially recognised the CAC as an organisation that holds unto its values as it is running with the core values that make it a custodian of companies’ registry.
In her words: “It is only in CAC that rules do not change. CAC is a place where rules are not changed to suit anybody as the Commission is always sticking to the rules instead of bending it to suit anybody or a particular interest”.
Dr Adukwu-Bolujoko said that it is not out of ignorance that NIM has not courted CAC’s friendship, adding that it is because NIM watch and know that CAC has been doing things right and delivers its mandate. NIM, according to its President has been running on the heels of people and organisations that have derailed on their mandates.
She noted that they go to other organizations with catalogue of challenges but have come to CAC with appreciation because it delivers on mandate and has contributed in keeping the country together, even as she enjoined the Commission to keep the good work up in order to shape the nation.
The NIM President particularly applauded the Management of the Commission for being focused, saying, CAC has a good Management team. She recalled that in some organizations they have visited, NIM ended up requesting for them to bring one director or the other, but in CAC she could see the entire Management assembled the same time. She described the CAC Registrar General as a visionary leader giving a visible leadership and she is sure to believe that he is a servant leader and one that has passion in what he is doing.
She further stated that one of the main purpose of the visit was to request the CAC to introduce a new requirement that people who come to register companies at CAC should be made to conduct management audit. This would enable the Institute put the right people on the right job as well as improve the performance of companies.
Dr Adukwu-Bolujoko used the forum to highlight some of the activities of NIM and forthcoming programmes including NIM’s 50th Anniversary. The theme of the forthcoming national conference is ‘Managing National Re-orientation’. She noted that Nigeria has lost its values as a nation as a result, there is need for attitudinal change, and the followers as well as the leaders need to change.
Adding, we have to re-invent those values that make us a nation. There should be vision that comes with passion, the vision must be shared. Leaders should exercise leadership outside authority like Martin Luther King or Mandela. Leaders with vision live in a world of their own and a vision not shared is not making any impact, stressing the need to go out and share the vision with ordinary man on the street even the market women out there.
Responding, the Registrar General, Alhaji Bello Mahmud pointed out that his mandate on assumption of office appears to be in line with the vision of NIM as he has been engaged in sensitization of business community on their obligations under CAMA and re-training and re-orientation of staff. He expressed his readiness to partner with the institute to move the nation forward. In recognition of the invaluable contribution of NIM to the nation, he pledged that his Management staff who are not yet members of the institute would be encouraged to be members.
On the issue of Management Audit, the Registrar General asked NIM to submit a formal proposal which the Commission will look at and see if it is something worth adopting.
He said that on assumption of office, he embarked on a four-point agenda to further reposition the Commission. i.e. Enhanced ICT infrastructure, decentralization of operations, sensitization of the public and development of human resource.
