As part of their efforts to ensure steady power supply in the country the Ministry of Power and that of Petroleum Resources are working towards effective collaboration to make power available to Nigerians.
Speaking at an inaugural meeting of the officials of the two Ministries, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison Madueke emphasised on a committee that would set up priorities, timelines and deadlines aligned to the set targets and goals for power supply in the country, which the officials must jointly work to attain.
She stated that there must be clear alignments on some of the works that must be done, adding that where there were delays, strategies must be adopted to accelerate work on completion of pipelines and the delivery of gas to the Power Plants. assured of the readiness and preparedness of her Ministry to support the effective operation of the Power Plants, by ensuring adequate and timely delivery of requisite volumes of Gas.
In his remarks, the Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji underscored the need for such collaboration between the two Ministries on the grounds that Nigeria’s power supply in the next five to seven years will derive primarily from gas-fired Power Plants. He stated that power from other sources such as coal and hydro stations will come much later. He said regular interaction between the two Ministries will ensure that Gaps in gas supply to existing Power plants were closed, and plans made ahead of time for proposed Power Plants which would come on stream between now and year 2016.
Present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Engr. Goni M. Sheikh, the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Engr. Austin Oniwon, and other officials from the two Ministries and relevant implementation Agencies and Companies.
