President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has said that the Federal Government will soon set up a committee on philanthropy to support and collaborate with various philanthropic organisations in the country.
Speaking at the First Nigeria Philanthropy Forum organised by the T.Y Danjuma Foundation, President Jonathan decried the neglect of the age- long tradition of Africans and Nigerians being their brothers’ keeper and enjoined the forum to bring up ideas and resources that will create a brighter future for Nigerian Children.
The President noted that philanthropic initiatives globally have been instrumental in poverty alleviation and improvement of the living standards of people.
While commending Gen.T.Y Danjuma for embarking on the initiative, President Jonathan urged wealthy Nigerians to follow the pathway of philanthropy by partnering with government and other relevant agencies.
President Jonathan also commended foreign partners for their support to the Foundation and assured them that Nigeria was a great country to partner with.
Speaking at the event, initiator of the Forum and founder of the Foundation, Gen. T.Y Danjuma (Rtd) said that the idea behind the setting up of the foundation was to create an avenue to give back to the society having benefited from it since his days in the military.
He said that the foundation’s core objective was to play its part in the emancipation of humanity by being “’our brothers’ keeper’’ through supporting initiatives that will improve on the access to health care delivery and educational opportunities.
Gen. Danjuma who extolled the virtues of President Jonathan and Gen Yakubu Gowon, said both leaders have exhibited great sense of humility in their conduct and are concerned for the poor in society.
Also speaking at the event, former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) called on Nigerians to play their part by investing their resources to help the country achieve greatness.
