Lagos Partners Tax Ombud to Boost IGR, Compliance
The Lagos State Government has pledged stronger collaboration with the Office of the Tax Ombud to boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and deepen tax compliance.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the commitment during a courtesy visit by Tax Ombud CEO, Dr. John C. Nwabueze, on February 17, 2026.
Sanwo-Olu said the partnership would be anchored on public awareness campaigns and improved citizens’ confidence in the tax system, stressing the importance of fair and impartial resolution of tax disputes.
Dr. Nwabueze explained that the Ombud’s office plays a critical role in protecting taxpayers against multiple taxation and abuses by revenue authorities. “Collaboration between the Lagos State Government and the Office of the Tax Ombud would enhance public understanding of the new tax reforms and stimulate broader economic growth,” he said.
He added that improved taxpayer confidence would lead to higher voluntary compliance, enabling governments to meet revenue targets more sustainably.
Governor Sanwo-Olu commended President Bola Tinubu for establishing the Tax Ombud, describing it as a cornerstone of ongoing tax reforms. He pledged Lagos’ full cooperation to ensure the success of its mandate.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised that strengthening public confidence in taxation is central to his administration’s governance agenda. “If you succeed in Lagos, then the tax reforms will be successful all over Nigeria,” he stated.
The Governor expressed optimism that the Ombud would help foster a more accountable and people-centred tax structure, reinforcing Lagos’ role as a leader in Nigeria’s fiscal reform journey.
