Global Aviation Faces Fuel Logistics Overhaul – Experts

Analysts say the global aviation industry is undergoing a major restructuring of its fuel supply chains as geopolitical risks, infrastructure constraints, and disruptions force airlines and energy traders to rethink sourcing strategies.

This was a key theme at the IATA Aviation Energy Forum in Paris and the AFRAA Stakeholders Convention in Johannesburg, where leaders examined the future of aviation energy security in a volatile environment.

Industry experts argued that recent crises exposed weaknesses in distribution systems reliant on limited transit corridors and production centres. Rising maritime insurance costs, Middle East tensions, and post-pandemic demand recovery have added pressure.

Although the US-Iran ceasefire agreement of June 2026 has temporarily stabilised shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, analysts believe the broader lessons will reshape supply chain planning permanently.

Data presented at the IATA forum showed Europe’s jet fuel infrastructure under strain. Italy imports 30% of its jet fuel, while Germany’s Leipzig hub faces tightening supply conditions.

One of the most notable developments is the rise of Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery, which has become the world’s largest exporter of jet fuel this year, positioning Africa as a key contributor to global aviation fuel security.

Chartered marketer Modupe Ladipo warned that temporary geopolitical agreements should not distract businesses from addressing structural vulnerabilities.

“The U.S.-Iran agreement may provide temporary relief, but the fundamental fragility of the Western supply chain has been completely exposed,” she said.

“Africa is no longer just catching up; it has demonstrated its ability to serve as a reliable component of global aviation supply. The companies that will thrive are those building diversified and resilient frameworks that incorporate emerging refining centres across Africa,” she added.
