Federal Housing Authority Begins Revitalization of Festac Town
The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has initiated a major project to restore Festac Town to its former glory. On Monday, the FHA officially commissioned the reconstructed First Gate and First Avenue, including the installation of new solar streetlights in the area.
FHA Managing Director Hon. Oyetunde Ojo stated that this commissioning marks the beginning of his management’s commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” for the mass reconstruction of public infrastructure.
A New Era for a “National Monument”
“When we were appointed by the President, we were given a specific mandate to perform, and the restoration of Festac Town was a priority to us,” Ojo said. He described Festac Town as a “national monument” and a place “very dear to FHA.”
Ojo explained that the reconstruction of the First Gate and Avenue is the first step in a broader plan to enhance security and restore the dignity of the estate. He noted that the Second and Third gates will be the next focus.
He also highlighted the FHA’s collaboration with the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), which has committed to the complete reconstruction of both the Fourth and Seventh Avenues, with contractors already mobilized on-site.
Residents and Officials Applaud the Move
The President of the Festac Town Residents Association (FTRA), Barrister M.K. Adegbenro, praised Ojo’s leadership, calling it “working the talk.” He stated that the FHA management has kept its promise to secure the lives and properties of residents. Adegbenro also appealed to residents for their cooperation in maintaining the estate.
The Divisional Police Officer of Festac Town, represented by Divisional Crime Officer Superintendent of Police Ali, stated that residents can now “sleep with their two eyes closed.” He assured the community that police operations have been intensified, making the town more peaceful and secure.
Other dignitaries who attended the event included Hon. Olufunke Osafile, the Member representing Amuwo Odofin in the Lagos State House of Assembly, and Prince Lanre Shittu, the Chairman of the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area. Prince Shittu noted that the local government has already begun clearing shanties within the estate and looks forward to further collaboration with the FHA.
