FG Launches CNG, Electric Vehicle Programme in Kano

The Federal Government has launched the Northern Corridor of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicle (EV) programme in Kano, under the Presidential Initiative on CNG & EV (Pi-CNG & EV).

Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by Deputy Chief of Staff Ibrahim Hassan Hadeja, said the initiative is designed to cut transport costs, strengthen energy security, and drive economic growth.

“Transportation costs affect everything, food prices, manufacturing, logistics and ultimately the lives of ordinary Nigerians. This initiative is not just an energy policy; it is an economic strategy for national growth,” he said.

Kano was chosen for the rollout because of its strategic commercial position as a gateway for trade across northern Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

Private firms such as Greenville LNG and NIPCO Gas have already invested billions in gas infrastructure, while Aliko Dangote’s fleet of CNG-powered trucks reflects private sector confidence in the programme.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf welcomed the launch, saying it would reduce transport costs, create jobs, and expand economic opportunities.

He noted that youths are already receiving training in CNG-related skills, with the state facilitating land access for investors.

Executive Chairman of Pi-CNG & EV, Ismaeel Ahmed, said President Bola Tinubu directed him to make Kano a hub for gas infrastructure.

“The President told me he does not want to be remembered only as the leader who removed fuel subsidy, but also as the President who brought a sustainable alternative for Nigerians,” he said.

Ahmed disclosed that five daughter CNG stations and two LNG stations have been established in Kano, with 40 vehicles and 200 tricycles already deployed.

Plans are underway to add 5,000 vehicles and 200 buses, supported by a financing deal with Lotus Bank for businesses across the CNG value chain.

Officials say the initiative will boost energy transition, reduce reliance on petrol, and position Kano as a major hub for clean transport in northern Nigeria.
