FAAN Issues 100,000 Airport Access Cards After Tollgate Protest

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued over 100,000 airport access cards to motorists as part of efforts to implement the Federal Government’s cashless policy at airport tollgates.

FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, said 62,000 cards were issued within three days of enforcing the policy. “Of course, in the implementation of the cashless policy, it made it quite hectic,” she acknowledged.

The policy’s enforcement led to severe gridlock and confusion, prompting President Bola Tinubu to order the airport gates be thrown open. Motorists have since enjoyed free access to airports.

The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, confirmed the President’s directive, saying the government would temporarily revert to the previous payment arrangement.

Kuku said, “We’re grateful to Mr President. He was able to step in.” FAAN is working on improving the cashless payment system.

The policy’s suspension has brought relief to motorists and passengers. The government will announce a new implementation date soon.

The development has sparked reactions, with some praising the government’s decision. Others urge caution to avoid future disruptions.

FAAN aims to ensure a seamless experience for passengers and motorists, Kuku assured.
