Dr. Adekunle Hassan, a globally acclaimed ophthalmic surgeon and distinguished community leader, has been announced as the new Olori Ebi (Family Head) of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Agunsebi, Ile Nla, Ijebu-Ode.

This significant appointment places the accomplished medical professional in a pivotal position within the traditional structure of Ijebuland, sparking widespread discussion about his potential role in the future of the revered Awujale stool.

A Stellar Medical and Leadership Pedigree

Dr. Hassan brings an exceptional resume to his new traditional role. He is an internationally recognized ophthalmic surgeon with extensive experience in Vitreo-Retina Surgery, Glaucoma, Anterior Segment, Cataract, and Ocular Plastic Surgery. His academic distinctions include fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow, UK), the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), the West African College of Surgeons, and the Nigeria Institute of Cost Management.

Educated at Ilesa Grammar School, Ijebu Muslim College, and the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Dr. Hassan’s career spans across Europe, America, the Middle East, and Africa. He has held senior consultant positions in various countries, leaving an indelible mark on modern ophthalmological practice in Nigeria.

Notably, Dr. Hassan founded the Eye Foundation Hospital, Nigeria’s first private post-graduate training institution in ophthalmology, and the Deseret Community Vision Institute. These institutions have collectively trained over 100 ophthalmologists and numerous other ophthalmic professionals, significantly advancing eye healthcare in the region. He is credited with revolutionizing eye care through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, making quality services accessible to diverse socio-economic groups.

Global Recognition and Community Service

Beyond his medical prowess, Dr. Hassan is a prominent figure in global ophthalmology leadership. He serves as the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Regional Advocacy Coordinator for Africa and is a Council Member of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB/WHO). He also chairs the Ophthalmology Leadership Group for Sub-Sahara Africa and is an African Representative on the AAO/ICO/WHO-sponsored Global Diabetic Retinopathy Classification Project.

His dedication to service extends to various professional bodies, including the British Medical Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria, where he previously served as Chairman of the Lagos State Branch. Dr. Hassan is also a seasoned businessman, having served on the board of Diamond Bank Plc (now Access Bank Plc) and currently chairs the Board of Directors for Summit Healthcare Group of Companies. He is also Chairman of the Board of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital Management Board, Sagamu.

Dr. Hassan’s extensive contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Mark Tso Golden Apple Award – making him the first Nigerian and African to receive this honour for innovation and exceptional achievements in ophthalmic education. He has over 100 publications and more than 30 academic and professional society awards to his name.

A Royal Connection and Philanthropic Spirit

A testament to his impact, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Alaiyeluwa Oba (Dr) S.K. Adetona, GCON, CFR, D.Litt, JP Ogbagba II, conferred upon him the chieftaincy title of Otunba Obaruwa (Ba’mole) Akile Ijebu. He is also a Member of the Council of Otunbas, Ijebu-Ode, and the Heritage Club, Afin Awujale.

Described as a “community servant leader and quiet philanthropist par excellence,” Dr. Hassan embodies the spirit of an “Omoluabi without borders.” He is happily married and lives a private life with his family.
