FG Launches N40bn CCTV Centre to Boost Security on Third Mainland Bridge
The Federal Government has launched a N40 billion Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) centre on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, aimed at enhancing security on the busy highway.
Speaking at the inauguration, David Umahi, Minister of Works, said, “When we came on board in 2023, we met a very terrible Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge and Iddo Bridge, both on the pavement, surface, infrastructure above the water and even infrastructure below the water.”
Umahi added, “The president, therefore, directed total re-evaluation and rehabilitation of the surfaces of the Third Mainland Bridge and changing the expansion joints. Lagosians were very happy with the president for that beautiful work, and that work completed and commissioned is still succeeding because of the quality.”
The CCTV centre is part of efforts to improve security and prevent incidents like accidents and crimes on the bridge. Umahi commended the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for delivering quality work on the project, saying, “The CCTV centre is a testament to the quality of work done by CCECC.”
Olufemi Dare, Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, said, “I doubt if there is any bridge in Nigeria that has what we have deployed here today, where you have CCTV to monitor both the underwater and even the bridge itself.”
Dare highlighted the centre’s features, including 240 solar panels, 10 inverters, and a 300 KVA transformer, ensuring uninterrupted power supply. He also mentioned a surveillance boat and two Hilux vans for monitoring activities on the bridge.
The centre is equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance technology to monitor activities on the bridge, with plans to incorporate other security agencies.
Dare thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving the project and commended Umahi for ensuring due process in its execution.
