Aviation Fuel Shortage Threatens Flight Safety – Pilots

The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has raised alarm over the persistent shortage of aviation fuel, warning that it is now threatening flight safety, airline operations, and worker welfare.

NAAPE President Bunmi Gindeh described the worsening Jet A1 supply crisis as a national concern requiring urgent intervention from aviation and petroleum regulators.

He said prolonged disruptions have led to flight delays, route adjustments, and extended crew duty hours, which could dangerously erode safety margins.

“Fatigue impairs cognitive function, slows reaction time, and, most dangerously, erodes situational awareness,” Gindeh warned.

The shortage comes as domestic airlines already face rising operating costs and skyrocketing fuel prices, reshaping the economics of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

NAAPE cautioned that grounded or delayed aircraft generate no revenue, yet fixed costs persist, worsening financial strain on airlines and filtering down to workers through delayed salaries and poor welfare conditions.

The union warned that if the crisis continues, more airlines may be forced to suspend routes or shut down entirely, leading to job losses and reduced national connectivity.

Recent operational adjustments, including Rano Air’s route reductions, were cited as early indicators of mounting pressure on carriers.

NAAPE urged the Federal Government, NCAA, NMDPRA, and fuel suppliers to treat resolution of the Jet A1 crisis as an urgent national priority to safeguard aviation safety and industry stability.
