Abacha Loot: Another $300m Coming from Switzaland, others

Even with controversies over propriety of how an earlier loot repatriated by the Jonathan administration in its dying days were yet to settle, Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyema has disclosed that the federal government was working out modalities for the repatriation of more looted funds.

The minister stated that the Federal Government had negotiating with Switzerland, which he said, had earlier repatriated $700m to Nigeria, noting that another $300m would soon be paid into the country’s account.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 22nd regular course of Foreign Service Academy in Abuja, there were ongoing discussions with other countries in a bid to recover even more.
“I met last week with Swiss representatives to work out the modalities for the repatriation of these funds.
“So far Nigeria has repatriated over $700 million and there are ongoing negotiations on how that money would be applied.
“We are also working to recover another $300 million which the discussion is ongoing too to get it repatriated” He said.
Such other countries aside Switzerland include the United Kingdom, United States and others to recover Nigeria’s looted funds.
He also said that the good will generated by President Buhari has helped enormously in the ongoing process, adding that lots of countries are co-operating with Nigeria in the process.
“President Buhari had earlier visited U.S, and there was discussion there. Right now there are ongoing discussion with the government around the world to bring these funds back to Nigeria” He said.
