2023 Poll: Group Seeks Transparency, Floats ‘SANCUS Project’ For Accountability In Political Party Financing, by Reginald Tobin

In quest for a free and fair general election in 2023, The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, CISLAC, Transparency International Nigeria has called for transparency and accountability amongst political parties in Nigeria.

The group who made the call in a meeting held on Thursday and Friday, in Keffi, Nasarawa noted that it will also drive its pursuit for transparency and accountability through the “Strengthening Accountability Networks among Civil Society” SANCUS, project which aims to solve the problem of dirty money in Nigeria’s politics.

CISLAC, through it’s Executive Director, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, explained that the SANCUS project will also reflect on the challenges of vote buying, political integrity and political party financing.

He said the project will enlighten citizens about vote buying and transparency on political office holders.

He said, “CISLAC/TI Nigeria is currently implementing this project with the focus on solving the core problem of dirty money in Nigeria’s politics which perpetuates a culture of lack of accountability and corruption for power preservation and self-enrichment. The aim of this forum is to inform citizens on the need for transparency in the political process, need to advocate for the enforcement of the laws guiding party financing and demerits of vote-selling and vote buying”

“With the necessary institution and legal framework such as INEC, ICPC, EFCC and others in place, the Executive Director believes such framework should oversee how money gets into politics.”

Representatives at this meeting were drawn from anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies like the ICPC, CCB, NFIU amongst others.
