Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Mr. Benjamin Ezra Dikki has revealed that in line with its reform mandate, the Bureau plans to initiate necessary policies and the legal frame work for the regulation of the Social Media in the country.

The DG who made this known at a two-day retreat for non-management staff of the Bureau held on Friday and Saturday, September 20-21, 2013 at Kuchikau, Nasarawa State, frowned at the present practice where offensive materials were uploaded on the various platforms of the Social Media without regulation.

“As it now obtains, all manner of things are uploaded on the various platforms of the Social Media without recourse to age and sensibilities of the users. This is not good enough”, he said.

Dikki who was apparently reacting to insinuations that the Bureau has a life span which would end after privatisation of enterprises in the various sectors, told the workers to brace up  for the task ahead as the Bureau had post-privatisation mandate to carry out reforms in the various sectors of the Nigerian economy.

For instance, he said that despite the reforms in the telecoms sector which has led to the liberalization of the sector, “much still needs to be done to check incidences of call-drop, excessive and illegal billings by the telecoms operators”.

While noting that the Bureau had made tremendous impact on the Nigerian economy, he charged the staff not to relent, stressing that as a cerebral, innovative and knowledge-based organisation, “the workers should always put on their thinking cap and come up with ideas that can develop the Nigerian economy”.

He reminded the workers that the essence of the retreat was to bring a bond between the non-management and management staff for peaceful co-existence, adding that “it is the non-management staff that do the job and therefore, there is the need to constantly bring them together to update them on issues that affect the Bureau”.
