The Acting Director General of National Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Charles Agbo has visited the scenes of flood disaster in Abeokuta, Ogun State for on-the-spot assessments of the damage and to provide relief materials to the victims.
Dr. Agbo addressing the Speaker of the House Dimeji Bankole at one of the scenes of the flood expressed his sympathy and deep concern for the victims of the flood incident stating that “The Federal Government through NEMA will continually uphold its mandate by giving adequate attention and support to victims of any disasters in the country”.
Various relief materials were delivered by the Agency ranging from bags of rice, mattresses, 20kg kegs of ground nut oil, three-in-one food drinks, plates, cups and other materials.
The Boss NEMA had earlier directed the Zonal Coordinator South-West Mr. Isiaka Akande to liaise with the Ogun State Emergency Management Agency for assessment and give assistance to the affected persons.
The Speaker equally expressed his appreciation for the intervention of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Meanwhile in another development, Dr. Charles Agbo has alerted of rising incidences of road carnage and advised motorists to ensure safety of lives and property through observance of traffic rules and careful driving.
He said most of the losses from the road were caused by careless driving and poor maintenance of the vehicles. Dr Agbo represented by NEMA’s Director of Training Mrs. Clem Aisueni spoke while declaring open a training workshop of the Agency’s drivers in Keffi, Nassarawa State.
He advised corporate organizations to always train and monitor their drivers and commercial motorists to avail themselves of useful knowledge for safety in the roads.
He commended government agencies that have direct mandates on road safety for being active in their various responsibilities. He therefore solicited more support and cooperation with the agencies which include the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Directorate of Road Transport Services.
On the training for NEMA drivers, Dr Agbo said it was designed to equip them with special skills to enable them contribute to the mandate of the agency and as example for other organizations to also avail their drivers of necessary skills.
Road carnage is a common disaster which has claimed many lives and property in Nigeria. At the weekend along Lagos-Ibadan Express way a tanker fully loaded veered off on the long bridge and collided with the embankment of the bridge that resulted in huge conflagration causing a terrible damage and traffic jam that lasted for hours. Also in Madalla near Abuja for instance, a tanker loaded with fuel skidded off the road rammed into a market where it busted into flame that led to the burning of many persons and properties.
