Maritime Book Launch Gets Dangote’s N10m Largess

The President/CE, Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote has launched a Maritime Book, which serves as a blueprint for critical government policies that will boost the maritime sub-sector of the economy with the sum of N10 million.
The Book Launch by the business mogul and Africa’s richest man was supported by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Walter N. Onnoghen, Justice A. Abdu-Kafarati and other legal luminaries in Nigeria’s judicial system.
Maritme law otherwise known as admiralty law, is a specialized field of law which covers vast areas like the admiralty jurisdiction, carriage of goods and passenger by sea, maritime lien, towage, pilotage, acquisition and registration of ship, proprietary interest in ship, safe manning ships, maritme labour, maritme safety, wreck and salvage, maritme claims, arrest of ships, maritme Security, treaties, conventions etc.
Aliko Dangote, who was Chief Launcher of the book was represented by the GED, Stakeholder management, Corporate Communications, Engr. Mansur Ahmed, at the 15th International Maritime Seminar for Judges in Abuja, on Tuesday, 3rd July, organized by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute, NJI.
The foremost industrialist said our Ports’ system and associated businesses must be properly enhanced especially as the present times are extremely competitive.
One must take cognizance of the fact that, “what happens in the ports influences what happens in our economy.
“As Cargoes owners, exporters, manufacturers, we are impressed by the Shipper’s Council initiative to reduce hassles and challenges that pervade the shipping sector.
“The Seminar would help increase knowlege of Nigerian Judges on Maritme issues and best practices in the face of modern challenges and technological advancement”. Aliko stated.
Seemingly interested at the plan by the Ghanaian Government to establish Tema Port in Ghana, Aliko said “We are waiting”, for the development.
Speaking at the event, Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Mr. Onnoghen, said Lawyers and Judges must constantly seek knowledge to improve their profession for speedy dispensation of justice especially in the unique law section which touches many aspects of business life of a nation.
He thanked the Justices of the Gambia, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Kenya, who have come to rub minds with Nigerian Judges at the 3-Day conference and share experiences and knowledge transfer to achieve laid down goals of their Nations.
Welcoming the stakeholders earlier, Chairman, Governing Board of Nigerian Shipper’s Council, Mr. Mai Mala Buni said in Nigeria, the importance of the Maritime sector to the nation’s economy cannot be overstated as it is one of the highest revenue generation sectors after Oil and therefore needs adequate attention.
He said Maritime business is international in nature and urged Maritme law experts to regularly participate in international Seminars such as this, to widen their knowledge and be better positioned to handle issues relating to developments of Maritme effectively.
“Our Judges need to be well informed about contemporary development and issues in the sector”. Buni stated.
The Book showcases 336 pages divided into 21 parts. It has Seven Chapters, Six topics and 5 Commentaries, dealing extensively with Maritme Law and Draft convention on recognition of foreign judicial sale of ship: Nigeria’s position and other topics.
