RMAFC Submits Pay Review for Political Office Holders to Tinubu

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has submitted its recommendations for the review of salaries and allowances of political and public office holders to President Bola Tinubu for consideration.

The disclosure was made in a statement by the commission’s spokesperson, Maryam Umar Yusuf, following a courtesy visit by the Council of Retired Permanent Secretaries to RMAFC headquarters in Abuja.

RMAFC Chairman Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu said the review exercise had been concluded and that many of the issues raised by retired permanent secretaries were already reflected in the recommendations.

“Substantial parts of the issues canvassed have been captured and forwarded to President Tinubu for consideration,” he noted.

Shehu described retired permanent secretaries as an important resource for government, praising their experience and institutional memory.

“Nothing can replace the experience of an experienced public servant. You are still relevant in shaping policy and advising government on intricate national issues,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Elder Akin Arikawe, National Vice Chairman of the council, said the visit aimed to strengthen collaboration and support reforms that would improve governance and public administration.

Federal Commissioners Ismail Mohammed Agaka (Kwara) and Rakiya Tanko Ayuba Haruna (Kebbi) commended the retired administrators for their contributions to Nigeria’s economic and governance policies, urging them to continue mentoring younger public servants.

RMAFC’s Director of Allocation, Dr. U.K. Umar, added that consultations were ongoing to review the legal framework and address the council’s requests in line with the commission’s mandate.

Under the Constitution, RMAFC is responsible for determining remuneration for political office holders, including the President, Vice President, governors, legislators, and judicial officers.

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) recently opposed any salary increase, calling such a move “insensitive, unjust, and inequitable.”
