Tax Reforms Must Protect Taxpayers, Ensure Fair Allocation – RMAFC
The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has stressed that Nigeria’s ongoing tax and revenue reforms must safeguard taxpayers while ensuring fair distribution of revenue across all tiers of government.
Chairman Dr Mohammed Shehu made the remarks during a courtesy visit by the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) delegation in Abuja, noting that transparency, fairness, and accountability are central to the reforms.
“We must work together to ensure that ongoing revenue reforms protect the interests of taxpayers while guaranteeing equitable revenue allocation,” he said.
Shehu explained that collaboration among revenue institutions is critical to success, adding that policy harmonisation and stakeholder engagement will strengthen compliance and public confidence in the tax system.
He acknowledged concerns around tax refunds, electronic transfer levies, and revenue allocation, stressing that continuous dialogue and technical engagement are needed to guarantee fairness and efficiency.
JRB Executive Secretary Olusegun Adesokan said the reforms aim to promote equity and transparency while clarifying revenue-sharing mechanisms between federal and subnational governments.
He assured stakeholders that consultations would continue to address issues such as stamp duties, advance tax payments, and electronic money transfer levies.
Adesokan added that the framework is designed to benefit taxpayers, government institutions, and national fiscal stability, while ensuring revenues are properly attributed to the right states.
The meeting ended with both organisations reaffirming their commitment to taxpayer protection, improved revenue administration, and stronger collaboration to ensure successful implementation of reforms.
Separately, Nigeria’s first Tax Ombud, Dr John Nwabueze, urged citizens and businesses facing unfair tax assessments or multiple taxation to seek redress through the newly established office, which provides an independent platform for resolving disputes with revenue agencies.
