Dangote Refinery Surpasses Capacity, Hits 700,000bpd

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has surpassed expectations, hitting 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) in output—well above its 650,000 bpd design capacity—and confirming its status as the world’s largest single-train refinery.

Vice-President for Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries, Devakumar Edwin, said the ramp-up is part of a plan to double capacity to 1.4 million bpd within 30 months, positioning the refinery as potentially the largest globally.

“This expansion will boost Nigeria’s energy self-sufficiency, eliminate dependence on imported refined products, and strengthen our position as a regional export hub,” he explained.

Since commencing production in 2024, the refinery has steadily increased output of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and other products, supplying both domestic and international markets. Exports now reach African countries, Europe (UK, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands), the US, and Saudi Arabia.

In April, the refinery became the world’s largest exporter of jet fuel, according to S&P Global Commodities, underscoring its growing global significance amid Middle East supply disruptions.

The facility has helped stabilize Nigeria’s fuel supply, easing pressure on foreign exchange reserves and aligning with national goals to maximize value from crude oil.

Founder Aliko Dangote has outlined plans to expand capacity to 1.4 million bpd by 2028, a move expected to create jobs, boost industrial activity, and improve trade balances.

Beyond fuels, the refinery will also support downstream manufacturing by supplying LPG, polypropylene, and Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB)—key feedstocks for packaging, consumer goods, and detergents.
