NRS Launches Unified Tax ID System Nationwide
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in partnership with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has launched a unified Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system for all taxable persons in Nigeria.
Announced in a public notice on Monday, the initiative is backed by the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandates every taxable person to obtain a Tax ID.
According to the NRS, the new system is designed to strengthen tax administration, improve transparency, and enhance service delivery.
“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the agency stated.
The Tax ID consolidates taxpayer records, eliminates duplication, and simplifies compliance processes such as registration, filing, and payment. It also improves visibility and tracking of taxpayer records, reducing leakages and boosting accountability.
The framework will replace the existing Tax Identification Number (TIN) Validation API used by MDAs, banks, and other organisations. Entities requiring integration have been directed to contact the JRB’s Standardisation and Modernisation Department or the NRS’s Tax Automation Department.
The NRS clarified that individuals can use their National Identification Number (NIN) as a Tax ID, while registered businesses will use their Corporate Affairs Commission RC number.
Officials said the reform aligns with earlier provisions in the Finance Act 2019, now strengthened under the NTAA, and is expected to harmonise taxpayer information across all levels of government.
The agency emphasised that the unified Tax ID will support transparency, ease of compliance, and better coordination across Nigeria’s tax ecosystem, ultimately fostering improved revenue collection and service delivery.
