China Grants Nigeria Zero-Tariff Export Access from May 1

Nigeria’s exports to China will enjoy zero-tariff access from May 1, 2026, following a new trade agreement between both countries.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai announced the policy in Abuja, saying, “Starting from May 1st of this year, all Nigerian products, 100 per cent, will enjoy zero tariff when exported to China.”

He described the move as a major milestone in Nigeria-China relations, providing a stable framework for long-term cooperation.

The agreement was signed on March 26, 2026, under the framework of economic partnership for shared development.

The envoy explained that the policy would particularly benefit agriculture and manufacturing, granting Nigerian producers improved access to China’s vast market.

Trade between Nigeria and China has grown significantly, with bilateral volume surpassing $28bn in 2025, nearly ten times higher than in 2005.

“Nigeria is now one of China’s most vital economic partners in Africa,” Dunhai said.

The zero-tariff initiative also aligns with broader China-Africa economic cooperation and South-South partnerships, reinforcing China’s commitment to multilateralism and development collaboration.

Observers note that the policy could mark a turning point for Nigeria’s export sector, which has long struggled with limited market access and dependence on crude oil revenues.

Stakeholders believe the duty-free window will complement Nigeria’s diversification agenda, encouraging growth in non-oil exports such as agro-processing and light manufacturing, while boosting local production for global markets.
