Tinubu Swears in Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, Hails Expertise, Dedication
President Bola Tinubu on Monday swore in Mr Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, describing his appointment as a strategic move to consolidate ongoing fiscal and tax reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s economic stability.
The brief ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the President lauded Oyedele’s professionalism, depth of knowledge, and commitment to public service. He said the appointment was a vote of confidence in the former Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.
Tinubu credited Oyedele with playing a pivotal role in coordinating tax reform initiatives designed to simplify Nigeria’s tax system, expand the revenue base, and create a more business-friendly environment.
“We are very proud of your knowledge, your simplicity, ambition, and excellence,” the President said, while also commending the new minister’s wife for her support and understanding, given the demands of public service.
Describing the new role as an additional responsibility, Tinubu said Oyedele’s dedication and determination made him well-suited to help steer the nation’s fiscal policy at a critical period.
“You are a very dedicated and highly determined individual. It didn’t take much for me to decide where you fit and where you need to be to further help with the economy,” the President said.
He acknowledged that managing fiscal policy at a time when economic stability is being consolidated without commensurate exponential growth presents significant challenges, but expressed confidence in Oyedele’s capacity to deliver.
Oyedele, an indigene of Ikaram in Akoko, Ondo State, is an economist, accountant, and public policy expert with over two decades of professional experience. He obtained a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance from Yaba College of Technology and later earned a BSc in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.
He has also completed executive education programmes at the London School of Economics, Yale University, the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Harvard Kennedy School.
Before his appointment, Oyedele spent 22 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he rose to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader. He is also a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School.
The appointment is expected to reinforce the administration’s drive to modernise Nigeria’s fiscal framework and sustain reforms aimed at promoting economic growth and investor confidence.
