FAAN Enforces Cashless Policy to Block Revenue Leakages

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced strict enforcement of its cashless payment policy across all airports nationwide, effective March 1, 2026.

Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku said the move is aimed at blocking revenue leakages and strengthening accountability.

“This initiative is about accountability and sustainability. We are ensuring every kobo due to the Federal Government is collected without leakages,” she told journalists after appearing before the House Committee on Finance.

The directive covers payments at access gates, car parks, and VIP lounges, with passengers required to use digital platforms instead of cash.

FAAN reported generating ₦387.8bn in 2024 and ₦483.1bn in 2025, with collection rates above 88%. Significant deductions were made at source for the Consolidated Revenue Fund, leaving balances for operational and capital expenditure.

The House Committee on Finance, chaired by James Faleke, directed FAAN to submit supporting documents on revenue generation and remittances for further review.

The cashless rollout, branded “Operation Go Cashless,” began in September 2025 at Lagos’ MMIA and Abuja’s NAIA, chosen for their high traffic volumes. FAAN partnered with Paystack to deploy contactless payment terminals across key revenue points.

While FAAN insists the system will modernise airport operations and reduce leakages, passengers have reported gridlock and missed flights during the transition, raising concerns about implementation speed.

FAAN reassured travellers that information desks and its official website would provide guidance, urging Nigerians to obtain the required payment tools before arriving at airports.
