Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria billed customers N255.19bn for power supplied in October 2025, but collected only N210.92bn.

The DisCos received electricity worth N303.85bn from the national grid, but billing efficiency dropped to 83.99%.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) attributes the challenges to inadequate metering, energy theft, and weak revenue collection.

Despite tariff adjustments and reforms, the sector struggles with revenue gaps.

Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company topped performance with 94.36% billing efficiency and 102.07% collection efficiency. Eko DisCo and Kano DisCo also performed well, with billing efficiencies of 95.71% and 98.05%, respectively.

However, Jos DisCo, Kaduna DisCo, and Benin DisCo struggled with low collection efficiencies. Jos DisCo collected only 38.98% of billed amount, while Kaduna DisCo collected 43.03%.

The revenue gap has raised concerns about the sustainability of Nigeria’s power sector reforms.

NERC stresses the need for improved metering, reduced energy theft, and stricter enforcement of commercial performance benchmarks.

The sector recorded a recovery efficiency of 82.49%, reflecting the proportion of allowed revenue realised by operators. The allowed average tariff stood at N116.25/kWh, but actual collection averaged N95.85/kWh.
