Digital Economy Now Contributes 18% to GDP – FG
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has disclosed that Nigeria’s digital economy now contributes about 18 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), reinforcing its role as a major catalyst for economic growth, innovation and global competitiveness.
He made the remark on Tuesday in Abuja while delivering a keynote address at the Digital Nigeria International Conference and Exhibition (DNICE) 2025, a flagship event convening government leaders, industry experts, innovators and investors to shape the future of the nation’s digital transformation.
Tijani noted that the rapid expansion of the digital sector is a direct outcome of consistent policy reforms anchored on liberalisation, investment in connectivity and youth-driven innovation. He traced the remarkable progress to the deregulation of the telecommunications industry in 1999, which he described as “a bold decision that unlocked a new era of opportunity for Nigerians.”
“Today, we are not just consumers of technology; we are increasingly becoming producers and global pacesetters in innovation. Our payment systems are among the most responsive in the world, and Nigeria is home to five of Africa’s nine technology unicorns,” he stated.
He emphasised that the growth is being accelerated by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which has embedded technology, job creation and inclusivity as core pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to Tijani, Digital Nigeria is intended to be more than an annual convergence. It serves as a national platform for collaboration and coordinated action toward a sustainable and fully inclusive digital economy.
“Digital Nigeria 2025 is about people, ensuring that every citizen, regardless of location or status, has the skills and opportunities to thrive in a digital world,” he added, urging stakeholders to strengthen partnerships that will translate ideas into practical socioeconomic outcomes.
The three-day conference is expected to produce fresh strategies and new industry alliances supporting innovation, financial inclusion, efficient public service delivery and global competitiveness.
