Wema Bank ALAT Clinches Nigeria’s Best Digital Bank Award at Euromoney 2025
In a major global recognition of Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital banking sector, ALAT, Africa’s first fully digital bank and a brainchild of Wema Bank, has been crowned Nigeria’s Best Digital Bank at the prestigious Euromoney Awards 2025 held in London on Thursday.
This accolade reaffirms Wema Bank’s pioneering role in transforming Nigeria’s banking landscape through innovative digital solutions and customer-centric technology.
Euromoney, a globally respected financial publication known for over five decades of benchmarking excellence in the banking industry, described the award as a benchmark of outstanding achievement and innovation in banking. ALAT stood out among other contenders, reinforcing its stature as a groundbreaking digital platform that redefined convenience, accessibility, and service delivery in financial services.
Launched on May 2, 2017, ALAT was not just Nigeria’s but Africa’s first fully digital bank, bridging access gaps and delivering seamless banking services to Nigerians at home and abroad. Over the years, it has transformed into a robust lifestyle and financial ecosystem offering services from transfers and loan access to international flight bookings, health consultations, investments, and even movie tickets, all on a single app.
The award also comes as Wema Bank marks its 80th anniversary, and ALAT its 8th year, highlighting a legacy of resilience and foresight. The Bank, established in 1945, has continually evolved with time, now positioning itself as a major force behind digital transformation in African banking.
Wema Bank’s Managing Director and CEO, Moruf Oseni, who received the award in London, expressed gratitude to Euromoney for the honour. Reflecting on the Bank’s journey, he said:
“Eighty years ago, banking was powered by typewriters. Today, we run a fully digital bank capable of supporting over 150 FinTechs. Tomorrow, the possibilities are limitless, but one thing is certain: only institutions that embrace digital today will remain relevant tomorrow.”
Oseni emphasized Wema Bank’s unrelenting commitment to innovation, stating that the Bank will continue to pioneer groundbreaking solutions that bridge the gap between traditional and digital finance, create impact, and empower lives across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond.
“This award is not just a recognition, but a challenge, to do more, go harder, and stay ahead. Wema Bank is driven by innovation and empowerment, and this win fuels our resolve to keep transforming lives through technology,” he added.
Wema Bank’s historic milestone and global recognition underscore the potential of Nigerian-owned institutions to not only endure but lead. As the digital economy accelerates, ALAT remains a symbol of Nigeria’s capacity for innovation, placing the country on the global map for digital excellence in banking.
